It was an impossible question to answer, but really the answer was irrelevant. Yesterday, to mark the anniversary of the first human mission in to space Academia Rossica gave me the opportunity to do something I never thought possible - I spoke to the cosmonaughts and astronaughts on the International Space Station.

The levels of tech this touches on are staggering - I won a competition via Twitter that was combining the celebration of Yuri Gagarin’s first venture in to space with the London Book Fair and ultimately the furtherance of dialogue between Russia and the West.

To enter I simply needed to ask a question to be asked via a live video link up with the International Space Station. I chose to ask ‘How many languages have been read on the International Space Station?’, I won, they posed it and at around 2.32 you can hear the answer.

My words reached the ISS and on the anniversary of the first human space mission, today’s inhabitants via twitter and videolink answered.
